My local getaway bucket list

Getaway Bucket List

We really live in such a beautiful country and even though I might think that I have seen many of the little towns and main centres, there are so many hidden treasures that I decided to start off with a relatively easy list for now.  A local getaway bucket list.

The Western Cape truly has so many options for getaways, that I really had to think about this list!  So as you will see, I have created a “characteristic” for each getaway and why I really want to visit this place!

(Please note that I have not been to any one of these so all of the images have been sourced & linked to the respective websites.  This is also not a sponsored post)

KolKol Mountain Lodge

These uniquely built log cabins are situated just off the N2 at Bot River.  The perfect distance from Cape Town for a weekend getaway.  Each cabin has a wood fired hot tub, how awesome is that! As the owner Rudi says on his website:  “Imagine yourself soaking in a steaming hot pool on a chilly evening; add a crackling fire, an endless starry sky and a glass of fine red wine or maybe make an early start to your day and enjoy the hot water whilst sipping on a freshly brewed cup of coffee and watching the sunrise on the horizon?”

Does that not make you want to add this as number one on your bucket list too? Each cabin has a stunning view and just what you need for a quiet and peaceful weekend away from the mad rush of the city.

They have a few weeknights still open for this year, but make sure you book way ahead if you are looking for a specific weekend as they are mostly fully booked! (Book here)

NOTES:

  • Private Wood Fired Hot Tub
  • Secluded & Peaceful
  • A Close drive for a weekend
  • Self Catering

The Robertson Small Hotel

This one is also the perfect drive from Cape Town.  +/- 2 hours and you are booked into heavenly bliss at the Roberston Small Hotel!  This weekend getaway is on my list because this looks like a quiet retreat in a little town where you can visit many lovely wine farms and stroll through some quaint shops.

Make sure you book a spot at this small town gem! (Book here)

NOTES:

  • 5 star luxury
  • Breakfast included
  • A Close drive for a weekend
  • Close to many wine farms

Old Mac Daddy Elgin

Ooh this one on my list has been coming for a long time! I love the idea of staying in one of these funky Airstream Trailers, or even in one of their Self Catering houses or tented camps!  Each trailer is decorated in a very funky fashion and is definitely an experience to stay in!

The tented camps should rather be referred to as Glamping, and I think if I really must choose I would pick Daddy’s Hideaway, which has its own private plunge pool, heated bath tub and shower and even swinging deck chairs.

Elgin is about an hour and a half drive from Cape Town and is a lovely place to visit even in winter. (Book here)

NOTES:

  • You can stay in a trailer, tented camp or cottage.
  • Secluded & Peaceful
  • A Close drive for a weekend
  • Self Catering
  • Some options have facilities like pools / swings

Klein Gelukkie Paternoster (Featuring Nog ‘n gelukkie)

I have been looking at places to stay in Paternoster since I have moved to Cape Town! Just never finding the right spot, until I stumbled across this one!  It is a bit outside Paternoster, but definitely the perfect place if you are looking for some rest for your soul!

(Book here)

NOTES:

  • Inside Fireplace (perfect for winter cuddling)
  • Secluded & Peaceful
  • A Close drive for a weekend
  • Self Catering
  • It is outside the town of Paternoster

Drostdy Hotel Graaf Reinet

Ok so technically this one is not a local getaway – hence listing it right at the bottom.  But it is definitely on my bucket list!  Imagine a 5 star hotel in Graaf Reinet a small Eastern Cape town, in the middle of what some might call nothing and nowhere. A true gem!

This is sure to be a luxurious stay.  Something you would want to do for very special occasions! It is quite a drive from Cape Town (+/- 750km) but I think this is the perfect getaway for a long weekend to a place you would normally either just quickly drive through or skip past. (Book here)

NOTES:

  • Perfect for a roadtrip
  • Quiet Town
  • 5 star luxury
  • Save up!
